Skincare: My Routine for Oily, Acne/Spot Prone Skin
Everybody wants to have beautiful bright shining skin. Your skincare routine is key! Whether you have Acne/Spot Prone, Oily, Dry or Combination Skin. I do agree beauty starts within, so eating well is also apart of your skincare routine! See my blog post on some Healthy shakes you can introduce into your diet.
So feel good about yourself and your body first. However, There is no shame and no harm in wanting to brighten your skin and change your skin care routine to have that glowing skin tone we all long for!
Skincare has always been a journey of mine, I have suffered with hyperpigmentation, acne, acne scarring; you name it. I was that woman that used toothpaste on her spots, so you get my drift! I have also been blessed with oily skin, now I say blessed because if you do have oily skin, although it can be a nuisance at times it actually helps to reduce wrinkles on the skin and generally the skin is smoother. So yes, if you have oily skin you have been blessed, your new skincare routine is off to a great start
My Skincare Journey: I have tried a plethora of products on my skin over the years and it still isn’t exactly how I’d like it to be and I doubt it will be perfect I mean who wants perfect anyway? My journey although it’s taken me on some dead ends there was a light at the end of the tunnel and I settled on a few products that work from me and skincare routines that also seems to work from me to so what I’m going to do is share those with you, below are some tips and suggested additions you can make to your routine to hopefully brighten and clear up your skin. Or you can use the whole skincare routine! If something is working for you now and you want to add support, just pick the steps that are missing
Skincare Routine Step 1: Soap
Start with clean skin! So 3 words: African. Black. Soap! It’s better if you can get the organic kind with no perfume. This is where you start to remove the impurities from the skin, treating any acne you may have and helps with hyperpigmentation. With daily use, skins tone starts to become more even, clearer and brighten. It also helps with oily skin types.
Skincare Routine Step 2: Cleanser
I tried a lot of cleansers, some of them I had a really bad experiences with, but you have to experiment to find what is best for you skin! I currently live by Clearly Corrective™ Brightening & Exfoliating Daily Cleanser by Kiehl’s. This cleanser is my daily go to! It does what it says on the tin. I feel it really does brighten the skin and improves the skins clarity. Since using I have seen a different in the appearance of my dark spots and coupled with the rest of the routine fits in nicely. This cleanser also feels really gentle on the skin.
Skincare Routine Step 3: Toner!
After washing and cleansing the face, you can use cold water to close the pores in order to prevent impurities entering them. However, a product I like to use and use daily is the La Roche-Posay Serozinc Spray. It helps to even the skin tone, is great for oily skin and it’s quite refreshing. I sometimes carry this around in the summer as a cooling face mist also!
Skincare Routine Step 4: Serum
The Holy Grail for me: Clearly Corrective™ Dark Spot Solution by Kiehl’s. I started using this serum about 2 years ago. When I started I was apprehensive, as I had tried so many products to help reduce the appearance of my dark spots. It’s not an overnight success BUT be patient with this product. If you use it day and night with a good skin routine, boy do you see results!! My face cleared up significantly. My hyperpigmentation started to lighten and when I got the occasional spot, it helped to prevent the scarring. Highly recommended. Don’t get me wrong my face isn’t perfect; it’s not SnapChat filter levels but has improved a lot.
Skincare Routine Step 5: Creams
So the next step is to moisturize the skin, those with oily skin, even more so as the skin produces more oil when it’s not moisturized. So In keeping the theme of brightening the skin and reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation, the daily cream I use is the Effaclar duo (+) by La Roche-Posay. This is great for blemishes, helps with oily skin and is not a heavy or oily moisturizer.
As the Effaclar duo does not have SPF, following the application of my Effaclar duo, I use the ANTHELIOS ANTI SHINE SPF 50+ by La Roche-Posay. This is the cherry on top for me! Helps keep the oil at bay and also aids the reduction of dark spots.
Skincare Routine Step 6: Oils
At Night, instead of using SPF to finish of the routine, I recommend using oils. There are so many oils that are good for problem skin. As I have mentioned using oil on oily skin is a GOOD thing, not too much though. Two of the oil’s I used (I switch between the two because I am indecisive, can’t all be perfect!)
Now, there is a difference between Hemp oil and Hemp SEED Oil. You definitely want Hemp Seed oil, this is more effective for use on the skin as it’s extracted from the actual seed and not the leaves. It’s great for any skin type and provides moisture and reduces inflammation on the skin so it’s all good to use if you have a breakout.
I love this oil as it is super moisturizing aids in reducing hyperpigmentation and is packed full of vitamin A & C which are both great for the skin.

It’s also a good idea to add a facial mask weekly/Bi-weekly to your Skincare routine, I make my own and have trialed store bought products with some interesting results! “My Face Masquerade Ball” Post is coming soon, look out for it!
